Tim Paine hopes that Ashes 2021 will go-ahead

Tim Paine Statement

Tim Paine, Australia’s captain, says the Ashes will be played this winter, even if several England players opt out due to Covid restrictions.

Joe Root and other England players have raised reservations about the journey, citing ‘bubble fatigue.’

If their families are not allowed to come to Australia, some players are considering withdrawing from the Ashes.

“The Ashes will be played

. “Whether Joe is here or not, the first Test is on December 8,” Paine said.

“It’ll be worked out above us,” he told the radio station, SEN Hobart, “and then they’ll have an option whether to get on that plane or not.”

“No England player is being compelled to attend. That’s the beauty of living in a world where you have a choice. Come if you want to, but don’t come if you don’t want to.”

Cricket Australia on Ashes

Cricket Australia has sent ideas to the England and Wales Cricket Board, which has asked for clarity on many points.

Australia has some of the world’s tightest Covid-19 guidelines, which is exacerbated by the fact that the five Tests will be held in five different states, each with its own set of Covid laws.

“It’s difficult to make a choice until we see what it looks like,” England captain Joe Root said earlier this week.
