The 1400 Year Old Mosque Finally Reopened. Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W in his last year of prophethood dated as 631 CE or 9th year of hijra offered the congregational prayers of Eid on a location 300 meters from Masjid-e-Nabwi and later a mosque was constructed on that Location now Known as Masjid al-Ghamama (Arabic: مسجد الغمامة) also called Masjid-e-Eid.

Construction Of 1400 Year Old Mosque Masjid al-Ghamama :

The 1400 Year Old Masjid-al-Ghamama was conceptualized by Khalifa Umar bin Abdul Aziz and its foundation stone was laid in the 86th year of hijra and finally, it’s construction was completed in the 93rd year of hijra. The mosque entered many phases of renovation under the rule of several empires.

The 1400 Year Old Masjid al-Ghamama was first renovated by the Sultan Hasan bin Muhammad bin Qalawan Ash-Shalihi in 1340 during the Sharif of Mecca era and then by Sharif Saifuddin Inal Al-Ala’i in 1622.  Then it was again renovated in the era of Ottoman Emperor Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid I in 1859 using modern tools and equipment to provide a modern look To Masjid-al-Ghamama.

Location of Masjid al-Ghamama:

The Famous mosque where the prophet offered Eid Salah is Located in the Ancient city of Madina Formerly Known as Yathrib. It is in close proximity to Masjid-e-Nabwi almost 300 meters Southwest of the Mosque.

Shape of Mosque:

The 1400-Year-Old Masjid al-Ghamama is rectangular shaped and made of two parts, which are the entrance door and prayer room. The entrance door is also rectangular shaped and has a length of 26 meters and a width of 4 meters, and has five dome-shaped circles drawn on the facade. The prayer room has a length of 30 meters and a width of 15 meters. It is located at 500 meters west of the as-Salam door of al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

Domes of Mosque:

The mosque has six domes in the shape of a circle. The largest dome is at the top of the mihrab. There are five domes over the porch area as well. Mosque has retained the architectural style of the Ottoman era renovation by Sultan Abdul Majeed I.

During the Life of Holy Prophet P.B.U.H:

The location of Masjid-al-Gamama is being historically used in the life of Prophet of Islam for several important activities.

  • Salatul Istisqa at Masjid al-Ghamama:

It is a special salah for invocation of rain. The word Ghamama means clouds which suddenly appeared and brought rain after the Prophet (ﷺ) had performed the prayer.

  • Namaz-e-Jannazah Of Najashi:

The ruler of Aksum in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) welcomed the Muslim with open arms although being a Christian when Muslims fled from Makkah to avoid persecution by the pagans of Makkah. He protected the refuges and did not deliver them back to the pagans of Makkah when the requested.

He converted to Islam after his famous dialogue with the companion of Prophet Muhammad  S.A.W Jafar ibn Abi Taleb the elder brother of Ali Ibn Abi Talib. He saved Muslims from the persecution of Quraysh and followed the enlightened path of Prophet S.A.W.

Prophet S.A.W Offered the funeral payrer of Najashi at the same location reportedly where the Masjid-al-Ghamama is found today. It is the only time ever he offered Namaz-e-Jannazah  in the absence of the actual body.

Mosque and It’s History:

The mosque was closed for prayers of five time due to it’s proximity to Masjid-e-Nabwi  so it is being not regularly used through the course of time to offer salah.

Re-opening of Mosque:

The Mosque was recently reopened by the Government of Saudia Arabia to offer five-time congregational prayers. Five times prayers are held in this mosque now with an internal sound system to avoid the clash of sounds from the Prophet’s Mosque. The mosque is one of the historical mosques of Medina.
