Big news coming over South Africa as Cricket South Africa board is suspended by the country’s Olympic body due to bad governance and corruption issues. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) took over the Cricket board for one month period and has started the investigation. They claim that the Cricket running body is full of negativity and it can’t produce good results in the future.
The Committee Governor made a team to look into the action of Board members so that possible measure can be taken against them. This might see other autocracy but the Committee has received many complaints from the sponsors as well so to avoid colossal damage they decided to grab them to the investigation. Cricket South Africa Board is denying every blame. This is the official statement from the Cricket board regarding SASCOC intervention.
BUT this is not an unprecedented event to ICC regarding Cricket South Africa as ICC has suspended CSA in 1970 as well. Due to the government’s policy of apartheid(a racist policy). The government bound them to only play against the white nations like New Zealand, Australia, and England and to field only white players. This led them to an inevitable ban from International cricket for 21 years and in 1991 they played their first ODI match after the removal of racist policy.
Jofra archer predicted this issue in 2013.
ICC has clearly said that they will only allow the Government Intervention in security matters only, very unlikely in the case of Cricket South Africa that they have been taking over by Government’s Committee and suspended Cricket Board.
In July 2019, Zimbabwe Cricket was suspended by ICC after political intervention in Cricket but they managed to get rid of the ban in October after ensuring that the board is independent of Politics.
This might be not good for South Africa as well because it is clearly against ICC laws. The committee says they hope ICC will embrace our decision as there isn’t anything exquisite in the board they want to clear the fuss. But it is up to ICC now whether they Suspend Cricket South Africa or not. ICC still has to respond to the issue as we haven’t heard any news from their side.
