It is very hard to imagine that a special child such as Muhammad Ikram who was born without the gift of hands can grow up to be a snooker player. He did not let his disability be a hurdle in pursuing his passion to play snooker but he trained himself to play with a stroke of his chin to hit the cue ball and put it into the pocket.

Muhammad Ikram put in a large chunk of his life to run after a sport like Snooker. He is 32 now and he has sharpened his skills enough to challenge anyone at his snooker club.

He during an interview with a media outlet at his snooker club located in the small town of Samundri near Faisalabad, Punjab said: ” Playing Snooker for a man like me is a hard job and needs consistency. I am available for a challenge game if there are sportsmen like myself”.

He does not belong to a well off household,  He and his siblings were not able to enter the doors of school because of poverty. They were secluded from the community because of there status throughout their childhood.

In his teenage, he used to spend most of his time at a Snooker hall in the locality while watching players show their sporting skill, that intrigued him to start playing Snooker in secret.

He said that when he started to play snooker he usually pushed the Snooker balls by himself when there was no one else playing on the table.

Ikram moved with the tiny steps to improve his game, so he started playing with other players at his club. Now after so many years of playing Snooker he can challenge any player out there in his hometown.

Now he is no less than any world-class Snooker player who possesses a wide variety of shots to display in his games. He plays solid as if he is not playing with a chin but the Snooker stick, with that confident strike he can show any red ball the route to the corner pocket and then hit colors into the pocket, gathering cheer from the audience and other players.

While the media outlet was out there watching Ikram play Snooker he missed a shot and failed to pocket the ball and someone tried to crack a pun out of it by saying: “Chalk your chin,”.

His parents did not allow him to pursue playing snooker initially as they were concerned that he may get injured while he is in a game. He was not able to hit the cue ball for years but finally last year he got the green signal to play snooker.

When his video got viral on social media he kind of turned into a sensation in Pakistan’s Snooker playing circle. His skill made the world go heads over heels.

He was aware of the fact that he is a known man around Pakistan but he accepted that he was not familiar with social media.

Many self-operating non-governmental organizations keep data about the number of disabled people in Pakistan, according to such individuals these numbers rack up to 30 million in Pakistan, A country with a population of more than 220 million.  Although there are no officials statistics kept up-to-date by the government in this regard.

In Pakistan, there is no concept like social security as it is found in many welfare states throughout the world such as Sweden and other European states. So lack of such opportunities hinders these disabled people from growing within our society, so in a matter of fact, they are confined to their houses.

The Snooker club in which Muhammad Ikram started playing snooker is owned by Muhammad Nadeem and he keeps Ikram in very good regards, describe him as a “true sportsman”.

Due to his specialty and love for the game the owners never charge him for using their facility. His enormous skill and passion for the Snooker, intrigue others to play with him and for that, they are even ready to pay to play with him.

The owner of the Snooker club continued to say that there is much worldwide competition for disabled people if we discuss the case of Cricket and Football but Ikram is someone special and one of his kind as we can not find any other example as such in the Snooker fraternity.
